The Open House of Silliman University Medical School was held last August 26 from eight in the morning until five in the afternoon with the freshmen as the front liners in welcoming guests to the event. It was hailed by far as the most numbered visitors amongst all the Open House events that had happened in SUMS history. Doctors, fellow students from Silliman University and other schools, and people with utmost interest in the human body graciously joined the event.
The Open House was divided into different departments. The ushers and usherettes led by Jessica France Delos Santos had led the path that made the guests follow a smooth flow as to which way they would go. Not only that, they have
entertained the guests to make their visit a fun and memorable one. The Physiology department led by Mark Andrew Uy offered unique services to the guests by sparking their interest about POWERLAB, CPR,
venipuncture, and blood pressure reading. The Histology and Microbiology department led by Jon Uan Silot gave a microscopic understanding of the red blood cells, bone marrow, blood vessels, yeast, fungi, parasites, and bacteria to the guests done in a very colorful manner. The Anatomy department led by Pia Olegario used models, bones, and cadavers in making the guests understand better the structures of the human body. The Surgery department led by Kenneth James Belga presented the different surgical instruments, and performed suturing procedures. The Ob-Gyne department led by Czarie Del Rosario gave an intensive understanding of the female reproductive system to the guests by using interactive ways of learning its anatomy and physiology. After touring the guests to these different departments, they were escorted to the area wherein they could win prizes, like stickers and key chains, if they could answer some questions.
Indeed, the event was successful due to the combined efforts of the freshmen and the Open House Committee of SUMS. Many guests were satisfied afterwards as they exited the building with smiles. Not only that, the freshmen felt an overwhelming fulfillment knowing that they had imparted knowledge and possibly sparked
interest to the people they interacted with. It is expected that the Open House activity of SUMS will continue to make surprises and will surely get better in the coming years.
