What brought you here? Was it an opportunity found through a
scholarship? Or an inspiring moment with a patient in a medical mission? Or
maybe the desire to help a family member?
Perhaps the financial security being a doctor can bring?
We were all brought to where we are today for a special
purpose and that is the most important thing to remember. We may have our
different motivations but our goal is one and the same. We want those two
letters (M.D.) to be permanently attached to our names. It will definitely be
one of if not the greatest moment in our lives.
But let’s not become too elated on what we are about to
achieve just yet. This desire will require so much from us. Being a doctor goes
beyond the smock and the stethoscope, it will demand years of hardwork . And as
medical students, we are slowly, feeling the demands of becoming a doctor. We
complain about exams and paperworks. We feel both mental and physical
exhaustion day by day. Our egos will slowly start to shrink, knowing that we did
all we could, but still it wasn’t enough. We entertain the thought of quitting
because honestly, this life is far from the dream we thought of. But we are
already here. It is too late to turn back.
So whenever you feel
down and discouraged, return to answering the question what brought you here.
And if it still doesn’t inspire you to go on, ask the question who brought you
here and that will surely be enough to make you stay. Yes, my friend, remember
that you are so blessed because God brought you here. You are beyond privileged
to become God’s earthly extension and take care of his flock here on earth.
This mission He gave to you because He trusts you to take care of His precious
creations.
Then, what more do you need? Submit yourself to God’s call.
The willingness to learn and continue on this journey is the much needed
attitude to become a doctor. Indeed, everyone is capable, but only few are
willing, and we are here because we willfully accepted this call. Open your
hearts and eyes to what is beyond the troubles you are facing today. Allow
yourself to feel that you are not limited, but what your grades dictate or by
the fatigue you experience. You can always do better on the next exam, you can
always rest and sleep for a while, but it will be difficult to forgive yourself
for not doing your best.
Hold on to what God promised to you. It may not be so clear
to you now, but rest assured God’s plan will be beyond what you hoped for. His
ways will always be better than yours. Our role is to give our best in
everything we do. Believe me, by willingly doing all things that is set before
us, in a way, makes the burdens lighter.
It is surprising how willingness can motivate the soul. It brings joy
and peace to know that you are doing things because you want to and not just
because you have to. Besides, our goal is to become good doctors capable in
helping anyone in need of our medical attention. In order to achieve that goal,
we have to equip ourselves. Be willing to fill up your tank and you will see
how God can make you an efficient doctor.
